Looking for assistance from Russia experts with two apparent varieties of common USSR stamps recently acquired in a mixed world lot. Both have notes referring to the Lyapin catalogue, I don't have any specialized Russia resources. Hoping for info and CV if available.

First - 1941, Sc 825, standard perf in Scott is 12x12. This stamp is 12.5x12, note refers to Lyapin 751A.

Second - 1951, Sc 1576, standard perf in Scott is 12.5, this stamp seems the same. Note refers to Lyapin 1592. Note in Scott refers to two printings with difference stamp sizes, but no details given.

Thanks! Greg

The Scott 1576 is Zagorsky 1547 and 1547I. There were two printings, one in 1951 that was 32.5 - 33 mm in height and another in 1955-6 that was 31.5 - 33.5 mm in height. Both regular sets have diamond shaped rasters but nine values of the 1955-6 set have horizontal diamond rasters.

Could you explain the "rasters" please?

Rod - This little article gives an easy to understand (I think) explanation of the why and what of rasters:

Re the first one (Sc 825), found out a little more. Michel 794A is the regular perf of 12x12. Mi 794C is the variety I have with perf 12.5x12 - some copies selling on Delcampe for $50+, compared to the modest value for the regular.

Re the second (Sc 1576), that is great info. I measure the height of this one at 33.5, so probably 1955-56 reprint. Also found another with same height that I'd forgotten about, and had been identified as having horizontal diamond rasters, which I can (vaguely) see under high magnification. I frankly can't really tell on this newer one which way the rasters are oriented, probably need a better scanner to really find out.

Don't collect Russia so will sell the first, and hang onto the second until I can analyze more closely, the help is much appreciated!
