French Polynesia 2011 Tourism Ua Pou is an island of the Marquesas volcanic chain which formed from a hotspot beneath the Pacific Plate. Erosion-resistant phonolites form volcanic necks rising above older volcanic rocks.  |

French Polynesia 2012 Landscapes Moorea is an island of the Society Islands, a volcanic chain formed by the Society hotspot. Rapa is an island of the Austral Islands, which is part of the Cook-Austral volcanic chain, also of hotspot origin. Both islands comprise Pliocene basaltic rocks with rustic volcanic landforms.   Mangareva is an island of the Gambier Islands situated in the middle of the Pitcairn-Gambier volcanic chain. Parts of a Pliocene crater protrude from the water as islands of igneous rocks.  |

Pitcairn Islands 2016 and 2018 Landscapes The Pitcairn-Gambier island chain was created by a hotspot in the south-central Pacific Ocean over the past 11 million years. The youngest Picarian Island is made of basalt and andesite, with rugged outcrops and steep coastal cliffs.   |

New Zealand 1991 Rock Formations Punakaiki Rocks are heavily eroded limestone formations on the coast between Westport and Greymouth. Moeraki Boulders are large and spherical mudstone concretions lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach. Organ Pipes are hexagonal basalt columns at Mount Cargill on the South Island. Castle Hill on the South Island is known for its unusual landscapes of an eroded limestone formation. Te Kaukau Point at the southern tip of the North Island features tilted strata of limestone interbedded with some sandstone layers. Ahuriri River Clay Cliffs comprise eroded gravel and silt formations along the northern bank of the Ahuriri River.       |

New Zealand 2015 World Heritage Sites Emerald Lakes are located in Tongariro National Park. They fill explosion craters near the summit of Mt Tongariro, a compound volcano made of andesite. Their brilliant colors are partly caused by dissolved minerals. Franz Josef Glacier scours metamorphic rocks of the Southern Alps in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. It cuts across the Alpine Fault, the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the Australian Plate.   |

Mt William National Park is located on the northeast coast of Tasmania. This windswept coastline features eroded Devonian granite outcrops decorated with bright orange lichen.   |

Australia 2015 Islands Cape Woolamai is a headland at the south eastern tip of Phillip Island in Victoria. One of its attractions is the Pinnacles created by erosion of the Devonian granite formation. The Buccaneer Archipelago is located off the coast of Western Australia near the town of Derby. Sea level rise created a drowned coastline with high cliffs of Precambrian sandstone formation.   |

Australia 2005 World Heritage Sites Purnululu National Park is located in Western Australia. It contains the Bungle Bungle Range which comprises Devonian sandstone eroded into a series of beehive-shaped towers or cones with steeply sloping surfaces.  |
