My great grandfather left me his stamp collection. I have been sitting on it for nearly 15 years and recently decided to crack it open. The problem is I don't know much about stamps. I have come here to learn and share my collection with others. I just want it to go to a good home and there are some really nice stamps here.

It all depends whether you want to collect at all .. learn anything about it . or dispose of it. If the latter, you could just take it to a stamp show and try to peddle it to a few dealers and see what they say.

Whatever the retail value of your grandfather's collection might be its best home remains with your current and future family members if at all possible. We are all just the trustees of what treasures we own today.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences. Russ

Thank you for the tips, everyone. As I went through these stamps, I found my great grandfather's briefcase of stamp-related business, just as he left it with the tongs attached to the inside pocket. Lose stamps within album pages needed a bit of rescue, so I took the tongs and began making them all perfect again. I enjoyed it, stamps are an incredible thing, and I learned about places that don't exist anymore. I might continue to collect because his US collection is nearly complete. It needs a few of the early-dated ones, but it is close.

How great! I hope you decide to keep that collection and become a collector yourself. In addition to all the great info on this site, there are also plenty of youtube videos that cover different aspects of stamp collecting.
