Seeking Saar Mount Sizes

I am going to start collecting Saar and am looking for information that is available regarding mount sizes for any and all Saar issues. If you can help I am grateful.

I could measure for myself but have not started acquiring material yet and would like to take some time to prepare my pages as best I can before I have stamps in hand.

Are you going to make your own pages drawing on your calligraphy skills? If not, whilst I'm not a keen advocate of printed albums, it might simply be worth springing for off-the-shelf hingeless pages from Safe, Lighthouse, Lindner or MOC. In fact, unless you want the fun of individual acquisitions, you can probably get one of these with a good range of material at auction to kick you off, which means that the expensive albums are pretty much thrown in for nothing. Any of these would also allow you to incorporate extra pages for those complicated post-WWI overprints

The primary problem I am running into is that none of the manufacturers, aside from Palo, produce complete Saar pages. Lindner, Lighthouse and Safe only print the German Saar pages and leave the French years as a conspicuous gap. I have a brand new Scott Specialty binder with slipcase and wanted to do my own mounting but Scott does not print Saar anymore that I can tell. I am not into starting from scratch or paying for Palo albums, the cost of which could pay for a sizable chunk of the stamps to fill it.

I have been looking for hingeless Saar collections at auction to no avail.

Back in the day Schaubek did make a hingeless Saar album and I find a sale on ebay from days of yore.

PS: I wish that Scott would include sizes in their catalogs with each listing. They make the mounts. How hard could the information be.

I think you'll find that Kabe - now produced by Lighthouse - offers both pre- and post-war pages. These are Kabe, I think

My own are a mix of pre-war Schaubek, post-war Safe. Safe also produces pre- and post-war pages - like others, they sell them in two blocs.

Bill Steiner's Stamp Albums https://www.stampalbums.com/ has pages for Saar. Maybe you could use those for a starter.

I have an old set of Scott specialty Saar pages (somewhere) I'm not using - both French & German. With some low-value stamps & hinge marks on the pages if I recall correctly. Not in perfect condition, but pretty good. Let me know if you're interested and I'll find them.

rogdcam, you have gotten some good information but maybe not exactly what you actually asked for.

Mount sizes: 26 mm, 30 mm and 33 mm will handle almost all the Saargebiet issues between Michel 1 and 205. In addition there are vertical format stamps which need approximately 42-43 mm but I am not sure of the exact size. If you are using top loading mounts like Hawid, that size may not hold the stamp as securely as one would like. For those I use 25 mm split mounts and use the mount sideways (thereby orienting stamp correctly). And there are a few outliers like Michel 83, one of my favorite stamps.

The three sizes noted will also cover most of French Occupation Saar and Saarland. Also good for most of Germany from 1849-present.

I assume you will use Michel, nothing else will really do.

While it can be tedious, you can count perfs on online examples of the stamps you are building a page for. Once you know the perf size simply divide by the size (perf 12 etc) then multiply by 2 that will give you the size of the stamp. From there you can choose the proper mount size / space on the page.

At the risk of going off topic (which I frequently do) I will add that while looking for Saar collections for sale at auction I came across an amazing selection of Saar rarities and complete collections in the upcoming Gert Muller auction. Mind boggling stuff that I never knew existed. All Michel listed which explains why the Michel Saar catalog is 166 pages I guess. There are a number of collections for sale as well in hingeless albums so who knows. Not sure what I am going to do. Thanks again to all.
