I'm currently trying to learn to distinguish the various printings of the early Castles issue of the '50s and '60s.

I think this is a De La Rue printing of the 5/-, but I still can't say that I'm sure.

Anyway, I noticed a small line or dash in the bottom right hand corner.

Could this be used to determine the printer?

Thanks for looking!

Is it a St. Edward's Crown watermark stamp? Sheet markings can be used to determine the printer. This looks like a guideline. The length and the fact it appears offset from the left would indicate Waterlow. The somewhat "runny" lines of the printing appear to be the ink whiskers Gibbons mentions as typical for Waterlow as well.

Thanks for the response.

It is St. Edward's Crown.

I haven't found guidelines on any of my other Castles, so I wondered if it was a feature of stamps from a particular printer.

All have. De La Rue have them in the sheet margin. They can incur on the stamp, but are short and should be on the extreme of the stamp, or show a vertical, or horizontal bar if they incur.
Waterlow had these in the centre and centrally on each side of the sheet, but inside the sheet margin.

So, your stamp appears to be from row 2, position 10 of the counter sheet.

Thanks so much for the info!

So one question: if there were one thing and one thing only that would enable a novice to identify a De La Rue printing, what would it be?

Linn's published an article on identifying the various Castle printings in their May 18, 2020 issue.
