I know a stamp collector that use to coorespond with a collector in prison. I'll ask him if he received any covers with interesting postmarks or maybe censoring of some type.

Hi All

As stated earlier. 'penal' mail can be covers etc from prisons but it is also widely accepted as the study of 'penalized' mail, or more commonly known as "Postage Due" mail.

Just thuoght I would throw that in. <G>

Cheers

Rod:

That is a standard "Box" cancel, used on parcels in the U.S. It is not a prison cancel.

It would be a brave man, to argue against you David
however,
I think the postcode reveals it is the prison complex there.

I certainly shall stand corrected, however.

The real truth is both David and Rod are correct. zip code 95671 is Represa, CA, also known as Folsom Prison. Yes, THAT Folsom Prison immortalized in the Johnny Cash song "Folsom Prison Blues". Once upon a time, I lived in Sacramento and we did quite a lot of visiting to Folsom (the town, not the prison), as they had a great Outlet Mall there, and some nice restaurants, and lake stocked with bass. Just in case you're wondering, there is indeed a set of railroad tracks that run right next to the prison.
