Hi

I have recently received an old stamp collection mainly full of 19th century stamps in an old album. There are lots of US ones and I am going through them at the moment. I am a complete newbie at this so any help is greatly appreciated.
I am trying to work out which version of this stamp this one is.
Happy to share photos of what I have but there is a lot!
Thanks in advance

You can identify all your US stamps here https://stampsmarter.org/1847usa/1847Home.html

Are you interested in starting stamp collecting as a hobby? or are you interested in learning more so you can disposition the material?

Thanks so much for your reply and the links. I am looking to learn more and understand what I have so I can treat everything appropriately...if I do have anything rare or valuable then I will need to think about what to do with it re insurance etc... I have no idea around quality and its impact...I may have something rare here but not sure so any thoughts are much appreciated...I have so much to learn and understand! Will post pic of stamp in a second

Second stamp info can be found here https://stampsmarter.org/1847usa/18...html#Scott64

Note that you stamp has a 'grill', a 'grill' is a group of parallel rows embossed into the stamps, the intent being to allow canceling ink to absorb into the paper making the removal of the ink impossible or very difficult, thus preventing the re-use of the stamp. You can learn more about grills here https://stampsmarter.org/learning/I...8Grills.html

Thank you very much Don!

Wow this grill thing is really involved...I must say I am having trouble really seeing it but maybe I need a jewellers loupe to see everything better... what is better used or unused..I have been looking online and sometimes used is more valuable unless I am not recognising a rare attribute

Generally unused is more valuable than used.
