Sorry to ask so many questions so soon but the stamp collection I have recently got has some stamps that are perforated and unperforated - is that something collectors look for or is it just what you expect?
Other things that affect value include creases, tears, pulled perks and overall abrasion of the stamps face. Most of the stamps shown suffer from at least one of these defects.
Not all straight edges are created equal. Natural straight edges mean different things in different eras and in different formats (sheet, booklet, coil), and different presses. It is not always simple.
Although in the examples shown so far, they are all natural production-run stamps from cutting the press sheets into smaller panes for retail sale.
Despite being less common, the current demand for straight edge U.S. stamps from panes is reduced enough to typically make the price less than fully perforated copies. They were once sought after to create mini-panes of 9 showing the 8 guide line positions around a central fully-perforated stamp.
Likewise, not all marginal lines are created equal. It is not always simple either.
