Hello everyone,

I'm so glad I found this forum. I've spent my morning reading through so many different pages trying to work out what I am looking at.

So far I have a double circle 'bridge' postmark. MU seems to be part of the name from where it was sent. The date is the 13th of a month after May? V being 5? The address it went to was in Dietersdorf in Fohsdorf. This is just 1 of 42 images I am working on at the moment for my grandfather. Some are carte de viste others are postcards, mostly with the line in the middle which indicates a message as well as address could be written (post 1902?). TRhe CDVs seem to be from studios all over Austria, my grandfather was born in the border town of Fusine in Valromana and moved to Knittelfeld when he was young.

Thank you for any help and pointers, very much appreciated.

There are 174 Austrian Towns beginning with Mu
and 64 with Mu (u with umlaut)

The Postmark was destroyed when the postage stamp was removed.
We have no way of knowing the town, as we have no region.
It could be anything.
If there is anything in the letter to suggest where the sender was, we could maybe assist.

Knittelfeld is in the region of Steiermark

Some towns in that region with MU and shorter to fit the CDS

Mudelhof
Muenzen
Munzen
Muhl
Muhldorf
Muhlen
Muhlner
Muhr
Mur
Murdorf
Mureck
Murer
Murfeld

Serra16, you have the dating correct.

Anything on the other side? This looks like a postcard from the scan.

This is the front side of it. Yep, it's a post card.

Does the "d" between asterisks mean something?

The month could also be: VI = June, VII = July and VIII = August. Could be May but...

I am not convinced that is a U, it looks more like an O. At the top, what appear legs of the U bend inward. That is unlikely to be a U. If the card is old enough, what now is Austria may be too limited a search area. Austria was much bigger before 1918. Ignoring abbreviations, the spacing would suggest six or seven letters. Also, town names change, local post offices may close.

There may be a clue in the message written on the postcard.

The "d" is a code for the particular cancelling device. It doesn't tell us much except that perhaps the town/city was big enough to have 4 cancelling devices minimum.

Thanks for the front view, but you likely already knew it wouldn't add to the story. Even the fence looks like a photo studio prop to hang onto so the subject doesn't move. Still, it's always good to see both sides of covers and postcards.

If the second letter is an "O", there are some more possibilities.
My first guess was "Mondsee", because it's just a few kilometres away from me ;-)

- MOLLN
- MONDSEE
- MOOSBACH
- MOOSBURG
- MOOSDORF

The other "MO-towns" would be too long.
