As it turns out the customs fee was more than 10 cents in the late 1960s, but it continues to make sense to me that the bulk of postage tends to be paid at the origin point (GB) and small amounts are due at the destination (US). I do find it unusual that the meter does not have a "PO" designator in the dial.
Bottom line may be to collectively admit defeat because it is too incomplete.
Another option: Someone in the US received a domestic package and took it, or the envelope, with him to the UK. There, He sent it somewhere. I know that here people used to give relatives in the Communist countries Israeli envelopes and aerograms, so you can find Israeli aerograms with Romanian stemps.
Happy to recognise defeat, it was kinda faitaccompli from the start, but we did garner members thoughts, and the wisdom of the majority can sometimes kick in.
I learnt of the customs suggestion, which had never occurred to me.
