Interesting point. Whatever happened must have happened after perforation. I can't explain the color difference though. I just ran retro reveal and here is the most interesting result. To me this doesn't sound like two extra stamps were attached, but more like it was used as a bookmark - the top two stamps were sticking out of the top - things happened...
Pretty clearly a reattached piece that was damaged and torn off the original block. Pretty sophisticated join, while ignoring alignment entirely. Probably worth more without the terrible 'repair'.
Yeah, that sounds about right. I doubt there is much of a market for a block of 8 off-center 26s, but you never know. Good thing I didn't count on the $750 price tag that was on it - lol.
"Rare Plate Shift" was how I remember Bill Lang's description of this item. His alternative description for a couple stamps literally torn in two and then stuck back together about one perf hole out of alignment.
Exactly. Going through his material can be quite entertaining. I'm doing my best to uncover hidden faults, question Scott #7s and 26As (so many lol). Plenty of good material and quite interesting pieces, but it is a minefield.
you can see where the paper is disturbed or spliced together running the width of the two stamps. it looks to me that the second option happened: "His alternative description for a couple stamps literally torn in two and then stuck back together about one perf hole out of alignment."
