Edit: As far as the method used (digital compare), you would have to be very careful and be aware of a number of factors.
First, use only high-resolution scans not photos). Make sure stamps are flat on the platen and scan both in a single scan. Ideally scan the stamps aligned above and below each other (not side by side) and in the middle of the platen. (Flatbed scanners typically use a single CCD and a lens to reach the outer areas of the glass. This introduces dimensional distortions towards the sides of the glass.) Use a good graphics app and a layer approach to overlay one stamp design over the other. Set the overlaid layer to a transparency level of about 55%-60%.
Always start with the assumption that you do not have a rarity; starting thinking that you have a rarity can influence your discovery process (called 'confirmation bias')
