Two cancels on this stamp both unusual. It would be interesting to try to figure out where this came from. The red one appears to be a letter D so probably a PAID cancel. But the black one stands out as quite unusual. Anyone have a guess on where to start looking to try to track this down? Is it just a geometric or is it some symbol that I don't recognize?

Just speculation, but the "D" could be from the French "PD" handstamp, and this could be overall foreign mail to or through France. The 15c stamp was used extensively on foreign mail.

See here for an example:

I saw this post and stamp and thought, "Hey! That's my #77!" Well, it isn't, but mine will show you the complete "PAID" cancel. It is a French "PD" cancel.

The black cancel is some kind of 'cork cancel' that someone else can help with.

The cancel is an early New York Foreign Mail cancel, identified by Nick Kirke in a talk he gave at NY2016. He assigned number to it - 66-07-01-SGEO. The earliest date that he saw this cancel was July 01 1866.It is illustrated in a handout he gave at his talk.
