Going thru a stack of Canadian covers I came across this one, mailed from St. John's, Newfoundland to Michigan on New Year's Day, January 1st, 1943. The cover is franked and tied by a 30c carmine Memorial University College issue. According to my (rather outdated) Scott catalogue, this stamp, Scott 267, was issued on January 2nd, 1943, making this an early use (on New Year's Day, no less). Could someone with a more recent catalogue than mine please confirm the issue date, and any thoughts about this being an EKU (and how do I find out)?

Stanley Gibbons list this stamp as SG 290, issued 1 January 1943.
You have a neat FDC there. |

Thanks for looking that up. Perhaps it was a typo in my old Scott catalogue. Although I would have preferred an early use, heck yea, I'm good with it being an FDC! |

My Unitrade catalogue (2008) gives the issue date as 2 January, but my Newfoundland Specialized Stamp catalogue (1995) gives 1 January.

Was the FDI limited to certain "official" locations or was it available at all post offices?
Also, were there any receiving markings on the back? Wondering if it was actually carried to the USA.

Nice to see it traveled. Wonder if the registered receiving mark was used due to the Head PM GPO stamp? Like that will every be answered. Six days to travel the 1549 crow-fly miles seems slow especially with airmail, even if only several days per week. |

I'm confused by the return address on the top left of the back. It's not like it's the senders Toronto address it's a different name. Also is it normal to see a envelope Copy righted in 1929 to still be in use in 1943. Or is this an item that was prepared for a collector? I noticed how it was entered and it seems it was done with care and on the bottom.

Quote: I'm confused by the return address on the top left of the back. It's not like it's the senders Toronto address it's a different name. Why assume one person was making a cover for themselves? The sender and recipient are different people. Kind of the point of mail; sending from one person to another. You can live anywhere in the world and send as request to a post office to mail an item from that post office. In this case the cover sender either sent the request by mail or travel to the St. John. In either case the return address was the return address. When I travel the USA for work, I mail items daily, each with my home address for the return address and the recipient's address for delivery. Quote: Also is it normal to see a envelope Copy righted in 1929 to still be in use in 1943. A copyright lasts years and years. If the copyrighted design still sells, no need to change it nor is there a need to update the copyright each year as you really can't copyright what is already copyrighted. |
