I was looking through the dollar boxes at a local show, and found a few Australia Covers. These two, though, has this stamped prominently on the back (Walter G Crosby, Stamp Collection. Philatelist Since 1928 d. 1947):

Now I know that Walter Crosby was involved in the design of various Cachets found elsewhere on this forum, and he died in 1947, but these covers have no cachet. Could they have been part of his collection and sold to people after his death?

Note that both of them were sent to Mrs. W J Evans in the Los Angeles area.

Surprised no one has chimed in. I tried to find any auction records of Crosby's collection dispersal to no avail. It kind of has the same marketing feel as when Harmer marked Roosevelt material. I would be interested in knowing from whence these came.

Yes, it has been sort of silent on this topic. I'll go back to the same Bourse dealer and see if I can find some others. I doubt it, but worth the look.

First time I have seen this thread,
There was no "Australia" in the thread title.

I dismissed it as a specialist US cover.
so did not open the post.

Hi Rod. I knew you would eventually find this, even without Australia in the title. The main question, though, is the meaning of the Interesting cancellation on the back of these nondescript covers. Since they don't have a known Crosby Cachet, does the stamp indicate that they somehow went through Crosby's hands at one time? It would be nice to trace their provenance somehow.

Hi Steve,
I doubt you'll ever crack that one.
I would guess they were backstamped on dispersal.
Covers Originated from Relations? Cachet collectors?

I suspect the first cover, was addressed by someone of limited education, (Check out the "Mrs" ) without a full address, one would never have guessed that. Combining capitals and lower case. etc.

I think your proposal, would be the most accurate.
Nothing in my collection, and not seen prior.

Don't share your view of the writer of the first cover, Rod. The "Mrs" is ornate, and the sizing of letters is often a personal flourish.
