I aquired several old stamps & after tons of research I find myself more lost now than when I started. Can someone's please help me identify the Scott's Numbers on these 1c double Franklins. All (3) sets seem to be the same type & size. If the pictures aren't great please let me know. I belive they are 11x11 perforation but I'm not entirely sure I'm using the measuring tool correctly. I'm not sure on the mm size 19? X 22? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nick

I like to use the perf gage as you are in photos #2 and #3 - place the stamp on top of the perf gage and let the gage that you are checking line up with the perfs on the stamp. I have found that if you have the right #, the silver of that #'s illustration on the perf gage pretty much disappears. And this is important - it disappears uniformly across the entire image. Having said that, the gage behind your photo #2 (checking the top of the stamp) disappears fairly uniformly. If you look at photo #3, though, the background gage is only fully blocked out by the side perfs of the stamp in the middle - you can see a lot more silver at the left and the right. I would suggest you re-measure the side perfs, as you did in the photo, but instead of checking them to Perf 11 on the gage, check them to Perf 10-1/2 on the gage. I bet you will get a much better fit. AND that should tell you what these stamps are.

Let us know how that works out.

And as Chris Palermo talks about in the excellent Stamp Smarter link provided above forget about trying to measure the design in fractions of a millimeter using a mass-produced metal gauge. There are better ways as you will see.

Best of luck!

According to Linn's double stamps are two separate singles and pairs are attached singles. And then there are double pairs which are actually blocks...
