Here is what Varro Tyler says about the 2c forgery in his book Focus on Forgeries:

"Forgery: The lion at the top of the shield is surrounded by a dotted background. Several of the dots are larger than the rest. Five larger dots are located at the left end of the lower row, and one touches or nearly touches the bottom of the lion's left forepaw. Another large dot is located just to the left of that paw. Two others are found, one to the left of and one below the lion's right hindpaw.

Genuine: All of the dots in the background behind the lion at the top of the shield are small and relatively uniform in size. None of them comes close to touching the bottom of the lion's left forepaw. All values are known imperf, but most such items are proofs or printer's waste subsequently sold to collectors. Privately perforated examples are known. Bar cancellations on the stamps require expertization."

About the whole set, Tyler says:

"The forger did not change the value inscriptions in the left (Jawi) and right (Chinese) value tablets, which in translation read 'two cents' for all six values. This permits instant identification of all the forgeries except the 2c value."

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I think that Tyler is referring to a more elaborate forgery. this forgery looks very rudimentary and can be seen with the naked eye.

...instant identification of all the forgeries except the 2c value.

Only if you can read in Chinese...

Thank you very much!!
The historical use of these forgeries is simply economic, to avoid paying the postal fee?

They were mass produced for the collectors market.

Their are a few different forgeries of this issue . The APS example is really just the above mentioned Tyler example . The APS Forgery collection is a real mess of many different donations ,all sitting there waiting for a volunteer to come and spend a month reorganizing it .There are some nice pages written up but that is less than 20% of their records. .

It's also worth noting that that specific barred cancel in the genuine stamp shows that it is a CTO, not a postal use. I believe Scott has notes to that effect...

The link I provided speaks about the CTO issue.

Does anybody read comments and links anymore or is it a waste of time. Sigh

Rodger.

Thx for posting the NB forgery link. Good info.

Recently purchased North Borneo and Labuan collection in Scott album. At first blush appears to be a lot of duplicate material. However, suspect there are many varieties to identify therein.

The problem with a chatboard is people can only find links to one type of forgery when in fact there are many different forgeries . Without explaning this a new posters starts to think their stamp is real .

You never explain anything. You just post pics and move on.
