Hello all,

I've recently inherited a moderate-size stamp collection from a relative (in the UK) who has passed. They were not an uber-collector, but many of the stamps in the (three) volumes date back to circa the 1940s, and continue through to the early 2000s, inclusive of dozens upon dozens of first day issues.

I am due to pick up the stamp collection tomorrow, after which time I will post an image of the particular stamp that I am posting about, however my relative left a note with the collection to indicate that they had acquired a "misprinted" version of the GB stamp issued in 1966 featuring Jodrell Bank. This was, I understand, released as part of a set highlighting British Technology at the time.

I'm yet to see exactly what the nature of the misprint is (I will know more tomorrow, obviously), but my relative apparently bought this stamp from the shop at Jodrell Bank itself where a small number were being advertised and sold as misprinted versions.

I have searched online and, whilst I can find numerous examples of misprinted GB stamps, I cannot find any information relating to this particular error.

Having no knowledge or expertise of stamp collecting myself, I intend to take this collection to a specialist auctioneer to obtain a valuation, but I wondered in the first instance if anyone on this forum had any knowledge of the misprinted Jodrell Bank stamp, its value, and whether it is known about/sought by collectors? *** Edited by Staff - Please review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***

The QE Specialised lists the Jodrell Bank stamp with " struts flaw", which may be what you have. I can't give a current value, but I suspect it isn't high. In terms of the remainder, you may find it best to use any decimal stamps for postage, as these generally have a price of c50% of face value at auction. With a few exceptions, the pre-decimal KGVI and QEII are readily available, and are unlikely to hit a high price. Most FDCs fetch around 10p each, sadly. Good luck!

Thanks, that is really helpful.

Is there a link to the QE Specialised list anywhere? It may well be the "struts flaw" that applies to the stamp in question. I wondered if there might be a photograph of this available, to which I can compare what I have.

Perhaps someone more conversant with modern GB stamps can advise. The QEII Specialised catalogues are produced by Stanley Gibbons - they aren't a free online resource.

I'm not aware of any "misprinted" Jodrell Bank stamps. The strut flaw (not a misprint) has been mentioned. What sometimes happens is that mis-perforated stamps are advertised as being misprinted. I look forward to seeing any scan you post, though, to clarify.
I believe in 1966 when the stamps were issued there was no shop at Jodrell Bank. Well into the 60's the Jodrell Bank telescope was, secretly, the ONLY means of detecting a long range missile attack so was quite a secure facility. The shop, I believe didn't open until the early 70's. It is quite possible that the stamps could have been bought then of course.
