This is my first post! Just started learning this stuff today and came across this one that I'd love some expert advice on. I think it's a 3c rose Scott 88 with E grill, but would like to get confirmation that it isn't a pink. I think pink is more valuable, right? How is color identified?
Thanks for your help.
Eric

Individual stamp colors are very, very hard to correctly identify. The best method that some will refer to is to compare to a known, certified copy. That being said, you can compare to others in your collection to get a good idea.

Note, in the future, please try to do a closer crop of your stamp. Preferably a scan, not a picture, and on a black background.

You can search for RH White in this forum for a discussion of how good an older color palette can be used. But, for the sake of continuing this thread, below are two scans from my RH White book with color comments directly below. On your monitor, they will appear different than mine, so use caution.

There are no premium colors for the E grill Scott 88. Scott lists rose, pale rose, and rose red. But they all have the same value.

(Edit: I'll add that there is a non-grilled 3c Washington Pink - that's Scott 64. It is much more valuable than a rose Scott 65. But yours is 88 as you surmised.)

There is one premium shade for the E-Grill, but it's not listed in Scott as 88, it is instead listed as 88a, Lake Red.

This is an image of an 88a on cover that I purchased from Mike McClung, who is the person that identified the 54 different shades of this issue, most of them not listed in Scott. Other shades for the E-Grill that aren't listed in Scott are:
Brownish Red Rose
Dull Rose Red
Orange Red, and then there are the others that rlsny listed.

Hope this is helpful, Ray
