Unhinged, Used Pricing

Hi, I need help with the Scotts cat. (2017). I notice that the catalogue will list a price for a new, unhinged stamp but they leave a blank for a used, unhinged stamp? For instance,

Australia #141, A16 1sh green new $42.50 used $4.80
unhinged $110.00

...any help would be awesome. Thanks for your time.

Hinging disturbs the gum. A hinged, or previously hinged stamp is not in the original condition as issued.
A used stamp already lost its gum and has been cancelled. Whether or not it has been hinged does not change that.
No separate price will be quoted for a used stamp that has been hinged. However, the hinge can detract from the appearance and affect the price (value).
But condition in general will affect the price (of both mint and used stamps). A used stamp with a heavy, smudgy cancel, missing perforations and other defects will not command the same price as one that has been neatly cancelled and is otherwise perfect.

For better stamps, you'll find that auction houses will often refer to "heavy hinging", which will affect the appearance of the stamp, as NSK says.

Am I right in thinking that German colelctors like their CTOs with pristine gum?

Price is for
1. An uncancelled stamp, (giving some leeway to gum condition)
2. Used
3. Never Hinged (A pristine, fresh, original stamp with undisturbed gum)

Also a used stamp, if hinged can be soaked such that the hinge and is adhesive floats and dissolves away. Can't do that with mint stamps unless they are the infrequently stamps issued without any gum (NGAI -- No Gum As Issued).

Thanks for your help. I wasn't looking at unhinged stamps as perfect, but that's what it means...a perfect stamp and the value is a lot more. I had it in my brain that because some old, used stamps are more valuable than new ones, that perhaps if they were unhinged that would add to the value. I was wrong! Thanks again. chery

The logic behind it all is that stamps assigned a catalog value premium for MNH are in shorter supply than their hinged counterparts. It mostly applies to older issues and makes sense because back in the day collectors used hinges to mount their stamps thus leaving only unmounted stamps that were put aside (not in albums) to fill demand that came from newfound popularity of pristine unmounted examples.

I collect Russia and it always comes to mind when this topic arises. Sets and singles from the 1930's in particular command premiums of 100% for MNH and people gladly pay it and more. It is easy to find many of the sets hinged but can be extremely difficult to find those sets never hinged. Rare is an overused description in philatelic sales but in this case many of these stamps in MNH condition are actually that and regumming can be a problem.

It's pretty clear to me now that the value of my stamp collection is not monetary but instead it's value is to my health and happiness. Looking at stamps, reading about them, talking to others about them, always learning. The countless hours spent with them is relaxing and calming, most of the time, lowers the blood pressure and brings me joy. This makes my stamp collection priceless.
