I haven't been here in a while, and am trying to learn as much as I can about the hobby. I've been buying lots of mint sheets and plate blocks over the past 4 years and I have a question that may be perceived (certainly by me) as naive.

Do modern day imperforate stamps come from uncut USPS Press Sheets without Die Cuts? And do folks who are selling plate blocks and individual imperforate stamps simply buying the press sheets and cutting the stamps from the press sheet themselves? I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm at a loss where to go to get it answered.

Many, many thanks.

The answers to your questions is yes.
Some collectors actually cut these un-perforated ( or non die cut ) sheets up and use the individual stamps on their mail.
Sometimes they even use it on their monthly stampclub announcements!

Thank you for the drippingly sarcastic response. It made me laugh out loud. Greatly appreciate this clarification. I am grateful to learn more each time I come on here.

Peter's reply is quite serious and factual. I once belonged to a club which bought a press sheet every year or two and cut them into various collectible gutter blocks, pairs and such to use as door prizes to encourage/reward attendance. Broadly, their use is by collectors and not the general public. They are a contrived "philatelic" product which has little to do with the USPS's mission to move the mail.

Does this mean that all covers are considered "philatelic"?

My opinion is that a singles, on cover, during the time of issue, are pretty scarce. I have a few, which were from philatelists sending me a stamp I ordered.

Most of the "used" imperfs I see are CTO, clearly a philatelic product.

My point was that if the USPS did not make press sheets available at all, that it would not impact their mail-moving mission. Nothing more, nothing less.
