Hi everyone,
i am a new member here from Canada. I recently discovered something strange in a small album. It is a US no 1610, what is strange with it, is that the tan color is missing. The stamp is still on fragment. At first I thought it was chemical or sun damage. Because the cancellation is also very faint. However there is no difference in tone between the stamp and the fragment of paper and the gum is still present on 2 corners and there is no trace of regum. I already saw some example noted as ''color alteration'' but still strange. I'm starting to wonder if it's possible that some copies without the tan color actually existed. What are your opinion on this?

I believe it is a changeling. Look at the way the small letters are missing printing and so does the candle holder.

While the tan background color on your stamp is definitely very pale, it is still present. Note the unprinted white circle between the tan background and the inner orange circle around the candle flame:

My vote is also for a changeling.

Absolutely agree with the others. More to the point, I suspect it has been cleaned to remove a cancel in order to use it again. That process has changed the appearance of the stamp drastically.

Hi there,
Well my first thought and what I believe, is that the stamp is probably altered. The question I asking to myself is, if they used solvent to remove color, which solvent have been used? Because the gum where still present is intact. Can the sun alone remove the tan color? I have seen other stamps on the web with the exact same color(as color challenging). But all were stamps without gum. The point that concerns me, probably one of you has the answer? How is the remaining gum unaffected? If anyone knows I would like to test it on a mint stamp to see the effect on the gum.
Thanks

The sun can certainly do this if left out in it long enough.
