Something odd about this cancel. It seems like it should be something. But it is kind of featureless so maybe it isn't worth too close a look. Anyone recognize it?

Rlsyn,

In the Skinner/Eno book this looks at least similar to the SD-M 20 1869 (Page 38).

It is listed as blue (Philadelphia) and looks very close but in a in a reverse image type. I could be way off but this is at least a place to check.

Given the part circle and the 2 tangential edges, I think you're on the money.

The obvious gap in the S-E image certainly doesn't seem present in mine. Maybe an earlier state or something? It's an 1867 grill fwiw.

I don't see a match. Of course, these cancels were applied by hand using carved cork and wood which wore and were damaged/degraded over time. The examples in the Skinner and Cole works a but a tiny fraction of the cancels out there.

No matter what I like the blue ink and geometric properties. Pretty cool.

Yeah, on third thought, I don't think I can really say it's a match. Maybe it was the inspiration for the design of a pacman:
