A couple of weeks ago I ran into these Dutch Arms of the 20s at a dealer's in Montreal and I mentioned how much I liked them. The fellow who was with me (not a Holland collector) referred to them as ennuyants (boring or common place). By coincidence, this morning I was on the phone with a dealer friend of mine in Malta and in passing he said something like "not worth the space in a stock-book".

I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but am I missing something here? Am I the only one who likes these issues?

I've always liked coats-of-arms on stamps or elsewhere, even though I don't know a lot about the arms.

They are a miniature history lesson because when you know why the arms were used by a certain family or state they tell you more about what is done there (or was done).

I haven't seen those before but do lie them. The rest of the stamp besides the arms seems to tell more of the story that is hinted at on the arms. Very colourful too.

I like a stamp that tells a story. The more details the better the story.

Perhaps they seem gaudy or some such to some people because when you compare them to other issues from the Netherlands that were issued in the same time frame.?? They seem OK to me.

Thanks for sharing!

Coats of Arms. Tony, I think the Dutch stamps are really quite nice. I surely won't discriminate against them.

For a comparison, please see coats of arms from Switzerland, mid 20s.

I think perhaps the Swiss stamps have clearer contrasts between light and dark whereas the Dutch ones seem to predominate a couple of closely related colors and as such the design does pop as much. The Swiss design is perhaps simpler.

All though a matter of taste.

We have a cricketing term, Tony
"let it go through to the keeper"
in other words, we see a bad delivery, and we do not want anything to do with it.
A good time to adopt the phrase with an off-hand comment like that.

I think they are lovely,
they would inherit real estate in my albums

They're classic designs of the era, and it sounds to me like a bit of philatelic snobbery to dismiss them.
