GB Queen Victoria - Identification Of Early Penny Red.

Just acquired an old time collection which includes a number of early penny reds.

One of the stamps has written PL88 BHND A REDRAWN REDRAWN FRAME LINES. Can anyone identify this with a Stanley Gibbons Cat Number ? Much appreciated. See pictures of the stamp and the note that was below the stamp.

The concise catalogue does not assign numbers to stamps from individual plates. It is in the range SG 8g-12g. The exact number depends on the red colour (referred to as 'shade').

I very much doubt it is a stamp from plate 88. The Q is set too high and the A appears set too far to the left.

Edit: the imprimatur does not show recut frame lines on stamp QA. Nor does SG Specialised mention any recutting of frame lines for stamp QA.
The Northeast star has a top frame line that extends to the right. Again, this cannot be seen on the imprimatur.

It is always a good thing for someone else to critically look at my observations.
Note: it does look like your stamp has redrawn frames. I only question the identification of the plate number.

I had a quick look at plates 46 to 131 just now and wasn't happy with any of them.

I will have a closer look tomorrow when I'm back on deck!

A drawback of the imprimaturs is that they will show the early state of any plate. Some plates were repaired. The very strong frame lines on the right - those on the left partly obscured by the cancellation appear slightly weaker but still well-defined - could also result from repairs to plates that do not show in the imprimaturs.

The stamp does look like type I, alphabet I.

With a fresh pair of eyes (that aren't feeling too fresh now!) the stamp is a plate 90.

I concur. Specialised BS30c, plate 90, heavy outer frame lines (major retouching).

The imprimatur shows the difference in the strength of the right and left frames and the extension in the Northeast corner.

I narrowed it down to plates 80 and 90.

The NE frame extension and the recut frame lines were the two factors that led me to plate 90.

The new Vol. 1, part 1? It looks tempting with images in colour. The site claims there is a lot of new information.
It is expensive. £ 55 plus P&P will, easily make it £ 70. Amazon.nl has it free delivery here at € 70.30. The second part was planned for this year.

Yes NSK that's the one! It's quite an attractive publication and yes there's lots of extra information that wasn't in the earlier editions.

€ 70.30 sounds reasonable. I picked up my copy here in Australia for under A$90.

One more thing - the description actually says "BLIND A" - the hole in A is filled in (blind).
