Username Questions From New Member

When I registered I was prepared to use my real name, but the registration advice warned against that -- so in haste, I chose a username. I have only lived in the "virtual world" once for athletic competition reasons; most of my interactions exist in the "real world."

Before I get seriously started here, and begin the introduction process with the established "wise elders" here -- maybe I should choose a explanatory username somewhere in-between my passport and the in-haste username.

I've perused the usernames of the frequent posters, but I'd love to see some "clever and explanatory" usernames that I might have missed.

From my reading of the rules and FAQs, you cannot change your username -- is there an easy delete/restore procedure? What would the moderators suggest??

And does anyone have any other sage advice about choosing a username?

Folks can decide for themselves if they want to reveal their ID. Obviously this can come with some potential issues hence the caution noted when you signed up.

I see no need to be clever with a username; we each develop our own reputations once we have been in the community after a while. In my opinion having a cutesy username does not really influence many folks here; being considerate, tolerant, helpful, and respectful of others is given much more weight here.

There should be no issue as long as you are not trying to sell sausage; Jimmy D(ean) has a lock on that. While I have no reason to know anything about you, if I am referencing you, Jimmy D, its easier to remember and type as compared to Xem_5 x I-1l wondrkin. However, a snappy user name does less for understanding your philatelic interests than the content of your posts.

If you get to 50 quality posts and start using the SCF messaging service you can chose to use the name you have attached to your email account or come clean with your real name. That is up to you. Me, I set up an email account in my user SCF user name and I been slowly moving all my philatelic email exchanges to that account.

That said, there are folks who are bad people on the internet, some who may want to come visit you after you post an image of your personal copy of US C3a or Columbian Sheet set you just came by. Or cause you other types of grief electronically.

My user name may convey an area of interest (you think?) but it does nothing to explain the reason I purchased last week a Falkland Island Dependency, South Stanley Island letter rate cover to England, sent February 1912, with SG ZU3, "South Georgia" hand stamp (SGZ2) used from June 1910 to June 1912. And, until I wrote this post there is no reason for any SCF member to think I or anyone else on the SCF would have one. A user name is actually limiting rather than expansive.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.
