I am considering buying a laser printer that can handle over-sized paper (Like Scott pages.) and then print my own custom layouts onto those Scott blank pages. Possibly printing Steiner pages onto Scott pages, or at least some form of modified Steiner pages due to the difference in overall size. I am thinking I can modify the Steiner layouts to better fit the larger-sized Scott pages, rather than to directly print Steiner pages to Scott pages and end up with a bunch of blank area left on the Scott pages.
Anyway, has anyone attempted something like this?? For those of you printing your own album pages (Steiner, or otherwise), are any of you printing onto odd-sized blank album pages? I realize that the printer will likely be more expensive than a regular 8-1/2" X 11", or legal-sized, printer.
I think my alternative to this idea is to print my own pages onto 8-1/2" X 11" paper, and then insert each into pocketed page holders, which would go into something like a 3-ring binder. I would much prefer the other option, resorting to this option only out of necessity.
Any advice? Any experience with what I am considering? Am I missing something?
Thanks-

If you find a laser printer that can handle the Scott album page stock, please publish the information. I worked out the following page formatting that will allow pages made with AlbumEasy to print on the large Scott blank pages. My printer is not wide format, but the tests I ran appeared OK when held up against Scott stock. |

Wide format color laser Maximum Print Size: 11.7 x 17" https://www.directdial.com/us/item/...ter/c7000-dnThis is a workstation printer, in other words expect a 150+ pound printer. Obviously a wide format laser is not a typical 'home' printer and they are costly, but there are plenty out there. I would expect to pay $1500+ for a new one; bargains can be had by buying a used, refurb for much less. I just trashed my 20 year old Xerox Work Station color laser printer. Purchased used, refurb when it was three years old (original new price $3000, I purchased for $400). I was also a brute, coming in at over 100 pounds. Don |

Thanks, uboatnut. I assumed that Scott pages are a non-standard size of paper - it is nice to know that it is standard-ish, at least in one dimension. Also, nice to know what the border dimensions should be in order to print into the proper place.
I hope to pursue this project after I retire - I am now 61 - in the next few years. I guess I am simply doing a feasibility study at this point.
Thanks for the link, Don! 153,000 pages per month duty cycle seems like complete overkill, but I guess that is better than underkill. The 157# weight seems to be a back-breaker. At least I know there is something out there. |

I use a standard Brother 11x17 MFC printer to print on the Scott blank pages and it does a very nice job. However, it is not a laser printer. |

PMStamp, do you know the model # on that Brother MFC? You've had good luck with it? |

I took 20 AlbumEasy Pages to Fedex to print on Scott Blanks. Their print guy was intrigued by the project and spent over 30 minutes experimenting, making templates and finally printed me an excellent set of pages. The cost? 19c/page like all B&W print jobs. I was amazed. |

The Brother MFC I use is an older model MFC-J6510DW. I'm sure it hasn't been manufactured in years. |

There are many wide format inkjet printers available today; but wide format laser printers are much less common (and much more costly). Don |

KRelyea, how much did you pay for the blank Scott pages?
It is interesting how prices are relative. I recall spending a lot (over $1000) for an HP Laser print years back and now people balk at spend 1/4 that for a printer. |

KRelyea's idea is probably your best bet.
Are you going to print enough pages on your own to justify the expense of a laser printer?
Your local printer would probably charge anywhere from 10-20 cents a sheet if you supply them with a print-ready PDF. |

Yeah, I saw Ken's post and it definitely raises a point that I had not even considered. I can imagine my total need to be in the neighborhood of 300-400 pages. At that point, I suspect my biggest challenge would be to find an operator as conscientious as the one Ken found at the copy center. Other than this project, I have no need for an oversized printer. I think I will pursue this path. I haven't used Album Easy, though, so I will have to get competent at that first. Thanks for thinking outside the box, Ken!! |

I think you would also be better served dealing with an actual printer as opposed to someplace like FedEx or Kinkos. Speaking as a "real" printer who grew up in the business (50+ years). |

I paid retail for the blank pages I think it was about 80c/page
I was very lucky to find that guy, I had gone to several other stores and they didn't want to deal with me at all. If I was going to do this regularly I'd buy a large format Ink Jet.

$7.99 ACC120 blank Scott National pages - pkg of 20 That's 40˘ per page + 20˘ @ for printing = 60 cents per printed page How many pages do you have to pay 60˘ @ to have printed to equal the cost of buying and owning the wide format printer yourself? Epson WF-7840 costs $350; you can print 584 pages for that cost. HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 costs $360; you can print 600 pages for that cost At 80˘ per page, it's only 438 and 450 pages, respectively. Can you justify the expense? |
