Quote: Hi tonymacg
the 2 pies - interesting information about the perfs.... I have four of these - have to scan all now.... The one I have scanned is showing 11 X "cannot calculate" in perfomaster
Wish me luck
Regards and thanks Thomas
I do wish you luck on the 2 Pies, but if I had to guess, I would say it's perf 11 all around. Incidentally, I find a Gibbons Instanta perf gauge far easier to use, and no stuff-ups like this |

Hi tonymacg Sorry for the delay in replying. Was caught up in work. And .... thanks a lot for the inputs. I am getting better in identifying the stamps now by attending your tutorials. Once more thanks a lot Now wondering if it is OK to post RRV I and II in this thread since it is George VI..... Do let me know. Meanwhile processing the remaining Raja stamps. Also a doubt - the 10anna blue with CGS - it is mint - so should it not be 1.5 instead of 1 GBP ? In fact I have a sheet of this also - 6X8 nos..... Looking forward to your feedback and Regards Thomas |

Thomas, I was thinking of starting a new thread on the George V era issues of Cochin, which would cover these stamps. They're all fairly straightforward, though. The significant differences are in watermarks (inverted or sideways) and perforations. These differences aren't really suitable for display here: they're the sort of thing the collector needs to check directly on the stamp. The 10 Anna On C G S mint is indeed £1.50. A sheet would be nice to have, although the key stamp to the mint set is the 3 Anna SG O40 It accounts for half the value of the whole set. The 1 Anna and 2 Anna are also difficult. |

Just today filled one of those irritating holes in the collection: the 3 Pies surcharge on the Third Raja 1 Anna 8 Pies used, SG 75 And only two days ago, I discovered a block of four of the same stamp mint for sale. So when that arrives, I go from a gaping hole, to having SG 75 represented both mint and used. Is this serendipity, or is someone slowly leaking a horde of these out onto the market, which will lead to an almighty crash in its value? |

Hi tonymacg Thanks for the information. One query on watermarks... What is the simplest method to see them? Should one go for the special solution used for the purpose and is this process liable to cause any damage to the stamp? And looking forward to the KGV era thread.. Meanwhile I had about six of "Kishangarh" - belonging to the "uglies" as referred to at many places.. I am uploading those images in the thread "So who is afraid of....". Please see them when you have the time. Regards and Thanks Thomas |

The watermarks on the Perkins, Bacon printings are virtually always quite easy to see.
Often it's enough to just turn the stamp over to see it. In fact, the watermark sometimes shows through the front. If you look closely at the 3 Anna I posted earlier today, you'll be able to see the outline of the watermark.
If that doesn't work, either place the stamp on a black background or hold it towards a strong light. Cigarette lighter fluid (preferably Ronsonol) is quite safe with these stamps.
The small umbrella watermarks on the litho printings can be very hard to make out, and you may need the lighter fluid with them. However, the umbrella watermarked paper is usually whiter, smoother and finer than the sheet watermark paper. If you can definitely identify an example of each, often just comparing a new stamp with the examples is sufficient.
It's a nice coincidence that you're putting up some Kishangarh. By the same mail today, I received a nice Kishangarh item, which might be worth posting as well. |

Hi tonymacg Thanks for the feedback on watermarks. I will start a trial on some duplicates of stamps in bad condition. And congrats on acquiring the 3rd Raja stamp as mentioned in your post. Regards Thomas |

One more possibility for detecting watermarks: For used stamps, or mint no gum stamps, if they have a build-up of old stamp hinges or dirt, try soaking them briefly in warm water with a tiny amount of dishwashing detergent. |
