I have hundreds of stamps to remove from a stamp album published in 1908. All stamps are 100 plus years old. After removing the stamp from the album, I have the hinge to deal with. I have tried using a spoon to heat the hinge, but seems slow. Just now, I put a stamp in microwave for 8 seconds. Hinge pealed off easily. Can I damage the stamps? The stamp was just slightly warm to the touch.

Why not just put in water for a few minutes? Heat and stamps aren't usually a good combination.

Certainly not something I would attempt for 2 reasons. The stamp could catch on fire just like any other paper that is put into a microwave without a water source. You could also damage the microwave by not having at least a glass of water in it.

Yes, that's what I would normally do, but trying to avoid the drying and pressing stages. The microwaved stamp came out flat and ready for 102 card. As I mentioned, it was only warm from the microwaving, not hot. No fuss no muss. But I do have concerns about damage.

Yes, re glass of water, which would probably mean a few seconds more for same result.
I believe you, re danger of catching fire, but believe it would take considerably longer in the microwave for that to happen.
So I am not so worried about scorching the stamp, but could other damage be occurring?

Agree with GeoffHa ,use water .

Sounds like your cooking the glue into the paper ,the glue is still there .

Geoffha & Floortrader you may be right, although The stamp is barely warm after such a short time. How would that differ from warming up the hinge with spoon or tweezers, that has been described on here?

Also, I should say that I don't think it will work on really difficult hinges.
Thanks for replying.
