I wasn't aware of that 1934 Italy set (being a Scott International collector and all ) but looked it up in the catalog and couldn't believe the value ($1200 used but only $130 unused) Do you think those are real cancels?

Floor, not sure if you saw Rasdale February auction Lot #1002. The price was not quite as strong as the few before that.

I was recently passed a children's collection--just a cheap paperback WW album and a cigar box filled with some packets and stamps cut from mail. But it did contain 4,000 vintage hinges which is practically a pot of gold. It may be worth keeping an eye out for children's collections (at thrift stores etc) not for the stamps but for the hinges.

Real, but CTO, by the look of them.

The other problem with old hinges - aside from the price - is that when you open a tin it's often filled with hinges that have deteriorated badly over time curling, bricking, toning etc.

GeoffHa is correct on that set . It should only be bought used with a cert's . I purchased it with the understanding they are most likely C-T-O's . Instead of being C-T-O-'s at time of issue they were canceled years later .

I have a question about Fold-O-Hinges. I bought a large bunch of these packs years ago, about 15 packs, when they were not so pricey. Some of the packs have green hinges that seem to work just fine. Some have white hinges that don't peel off well. Did they change the way they were made or did someone switch them out with new junk hinges and sell them as old and rip me off? They were all in original old sealed packs And mixed about 1/2 and 1/2. Not in the same packs.

Olddutch2 --- Interesting post , I heard about this problem back around 2005 on the old ebay Chat Board . The same thing as you posted here .

I believe this could happen when you have two different hinges pricing which at that time was big {like one pack of hinges cost $1.00 and a better hinge pack costing $5.00 or $6.00} , but today where the spread in price is 10X or more greater .

Sat thru the Dutch Country Stamp Auctions, the past two days on my Stamp Auction Network website . It was a interesting experience ,thought there was not a lot of interest in average collectible material but this auction this week surprised me with the aggressive bidding .

I bought some stuff just to have something new to look at and sort .Only got one lot that will expand my collection ,the rest is fun and games to sort .

floortrader -- I bought these all from the same seller about 8-10 years ago. I was all one lot and I believe they came out to about $5-$6 a pack. I don't recall the seller {getting older and the memory not what it used to be} but they had a good rating on ebay, as I don't usually buy from sellers unless they do. I have about thirty packs of the various types of Dennison hinges and many packs of various brands that I believe were made by Dennison and have not had any problems with them. As you know, all the newer hinges I have are all pretty much junk. Stick well but hard to remove without damage to stamps and/or pages.

OLDDUTCH2--- Shame it happens .

The two positive things are , first it was a small amount of money ,before price took off and the cost could of been 5 to 6 times higher . The second item is you broadcasted to the philatelic community ,so other fellow collectors would keep a eye to this scam by sellers .

Nothing devalues your collection faster than a buyer seeing you used Scotch Tape to mount your stamps . This is something that the faster you trash it the less you have to think about it . .

Don't look like the tape has stained them yet. I probably could've saved them. A little D-limonene works wonders on tape removal.
