In 1945, that, certainly, would not all have been different stamps.

It would also depend on how much of the collecting had already been assembled before the WPA got into gear.

I think the U.S. and all the Ally nations were Blessed to have a person like him sitting in the White House . The right man in the right place at the right time .

FDR was a true stamp collector and accumulator too. He started when he was young and kept at it right up to his final days. Of course he had access to scads of material and got custom albums made (think of all the proofs!) . Nice Hong Kong , still working to get the higher values . They just don't come up often and the used are harder to find .

I've been looking around the Scott International vol. I ,the 1840 thru 1940 pages . There are a lot of difficult sets that need to be picked up to complete the album . Now after spending a few hours looking at prices and what it takes to complete some of those pages ,it really hits you that it can't be done on the cheap ,sure a person can fill most of it maybe 10,000 or 15,000 stamps but it seems your going to spend a lot of money filling holes .

What would drive me nuts is a problem I don't have a answer for . The album page shows 8 stamps are needed to fill the album . But the set in the catalog shows 10 stamps in the complete set ,those two extra high price stamps are the way dealers sell it , but the two stamps are 2/3 of the price for the set . But I don't want the complete set just the cheaper low value stamps . So I pass on the purchase .
Then on ebay ,I find 5 of the cheaper stamps at a crazy price from a seller ,question becomes do I spend money to get 5 of the 8 ,and live with it hoping the 3 others show up somewhere . Or after overpaying for the 5 and find the 8 stamps years later ,then pay for it and cry about the 5 I overpaid for .

This would drive me nuts and cry about wasting money .Now I understand why a completed Volume I sells for over $30,000.00

Aside from the stamps where Scott made a mistake, eg Syria, I imagine the expectation was that, if people were getting sets well beyond what was shown in the album, they'd graduate to the individual country albums.

Geoff, sorry to sound like a dummy but what mistakes are you referring to? I have never seen much of the inside of these albums.

Shermae - The one that's usually mentioned is the accidental inclusion of a Syrian error stamp, rather than a standard issue. Don't know if there are others.

Let me put together a better explaination so new collectors will understand what is being talked about here .give me a few minutes ,what GeoffHa is talking about is the stamp from Syria Scott Catalog # 106c .

Here are the two stamps that are involued to make the "error" . You notice both stamps are green but the 5c. stamp is overprinted with 25c. overprint . The other is a 10c. stamp with a 50c. overprint .

The "error" is someone overprinted the 10c. stamp with the overprint of 25c.

The problem is the Scott publishing company when they printed their album back in 1942 ,included a space to mount this error . I never cared about this error .

Now you ask why FLOORTRADE doesn't get his underwear in a bunch over getting this stamp ? Simple answer is there are hundreds of these errors and I can go broke trying to get them all .

Little history about this ---- France was given the Levant after WWI to adminstrate . That would be Syria ,Lebanon , Alaouites ,, Alexandretta and Cilicia .
All kinds of FUN and GAMES were going on at the printing offices with overprints so you can find all kinds of stupid stuff being sold to collectors like overprints inverted ,overprints in different colors ,wide spacing in overprints, parts of the overprints omitted and double overprints. ,there are hundreds of them across all the above countries . Now you know why I call it fun and games on hundreds of stamps ,so don't call it a ERROR ,it is not it is a money grab .

Guess people here don't like me calling something going on in 1919-1921 a money grab .
