Pushing 330,000 All Different Worldwide Stamps In One Collection .

Just as I wrote about it earlier ,that if people talk about a hard stamp to get ,somebody will go and buy that stamp right away on ebay .

That is what happen on our discussion about the Algeria #46 , it sold for $1.20 on 7-4-24 on ebay . That is why the $4.70 one is now the only one aviaible .

A lesson learned here ,you talk about a stamp you are looking for or want to buy and someone starts sweeping thru the internet for the same . As EYEON WALL said maybe it is underpriced and a person is looking for a quick grab .

SHERMAE ---How is the pricing at Downtown Stamps ? If you send them a want list are they pricing your purchase at full catalog ?

I'm sure you're right but if I knew about these I could mention them in the title of my country lot auctions and make them a little easier to find.

Floortrader- they often sell me MNH material well below cat- 1/2 for example. It partly depends on scarcity, partly on when they have a sale going on. I do look for the sales events for when I send in a wants list.

I would just ask as I don't know if I am considered a "preferred" customer. I have been buying from them for at least 25 years if not longer. Huge stock.

I'm posting this as an FYI to all of you worldwide collectors.
I recall from reading the various posts that worldwide collector require many catalogs that deal with a specific regions or countries. Names like Gibbons and Michel are often mentioned. Although I'm not a worldwide collector, I found as I was browsing an upcoming Kelleher auction that they listed a large number of catalogs useful to a worldwide collector. All these might be interesting for worldwide collectors, but the majority are specialist studies, quite a few deal with postal history and less with the stamps, and most of the catalogues are quite outdated.

As interesting as they might be, you need very deep pockets to buy a number of these. Some may not even be on the market. And if you collect more recent years, they do not suffice.

Auctioneers will refer to old studies of they have valuable postal history items, cancellations, or specialised stamps. Worldwide collectors might shy away from such specialisation, as these items are expensive varieties of stamps.

Gibbons, Michel and Yvert are mentioned because they, like Scott have worldwide catalogues. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Also, each is used in specific regions. If you want to buy stamps in Europe, you will find few Scott numbers quoted. German sellers tend to use Michel numbers, French Yvert, British Gibbons. And the rest of Europe will have cultural ties to one of these. Markets for European countries tend to be deeper in the countries themselves. The colonies, frequently, also are.

Most collectors don't understand how cheap these books are selling for .

I don't need the most recent prices in the catalog ,I need a book a few years old that lists varities and shades .

Something you find in very few WW collections , British East Africa . This is one of those countries you never see stamps from .

Still going down that path looking for unusual countries and trying to fill in spaces outside of what most collections have .

I enjoy this thread very much, even though I'm not an active worldwide collector.

The quote comes from an article by Scott Trepel, and I don't know his source, but its an interesting datapoint.

That would be less than 8,000 stamps per album. Either stamps were very widely spaced or a lot of blocks and sheets were part of the collection and counted individually?

I doubt if he had much to do with it - probably a WPA project.
