Yes, of course, but it is hidden
one has to pay a King's ransom to purchase the GB Perfin Catalogue

We have to rely here at SCF, for "Nigel" or "TommTomm" ?
to respond with assistance.
Hang in there.

Hi Rod,

My old catalogue only lists one J/C&Co die.

This is J1420.01 used by James Carter & Co, Seed Merchants, 237/8 High Holborn, London WC.

The postmark matches the WC postcode nicely!

Carters were a major seed business selling around the world.

I remember seeing seed packets with the Carters Tested Seeds branding.

I believe the company disappeared in the 1960s/1970s but the brand still exists.

Thanks Nigel !
added to my perfin database

Unusual though, as you say "Major business" over the years
but from my cursory view on KGV etc sets
the perfin die punctures showed few results.

Not many via Googles either

Recent-ish history for Carters. In the 1970s the name was taken over by Cuthbert Seeds, based in Llangollen, North Wales, quite local to me. One from my small West Berlin collection.

,,,"Updated (total now 300 GB perfins)"

I have an interest in how others keep records of perfins...mine below. Of course, I will now have to update my database as well.

Nice detailed work Scot

I figured out why my search failed,
I had put "Carter's tested seeds" under my database "GB Commercial Overprints"
I had no idea at the time they also had perfins.

Perhaps I should meld the two?

Thanks for all the help with the identification. I'm ready to plant some cold weather crops now, so there is a tie-in with J Carter. Now to find time for eBay…
