What is the new device that you are using, and what are you measuring?

Follow the printed instructions which you can see over your stamp in the bottom photo, and you should be fine. Sonic is a fine tool. Happy 594 hunting!

The OP's image is using a "Precision US Specialty Multi Gauge", however I will illustrate this with a Phil-A-Meter Gauge, which has the same principle.

Orient the gauge upright and align the stamp very carefully with the upper left corner of the design, then see if the stamp is wide enough or tall enough to have the image touch the wider lines at right or bottom.

Flat plate, the design is definitely short of the wider black lines:

Rotary plate ( a type III coil, which MUST be rotary), the design touches the wider black line at right, as one would expect:

There's two thousand words of explanation, right there.

I suppose a beginner might see the tips of the perfs touching the "rotary" line in the first image and be tricked into thinking that's what is being measured. Forget the perfs/paper...we're only dealing with the design itself.

Not if you read the printed instructions directly over the portion of the Sonic gauge that you use to measure the design. Clear as a cloudless day in Scottsdale!

Not all beginners read instructions. Not all veterans do, either.

Apparently out of stock from the maker, Sonic Imagery Labs, but the usual suspects seem have it (the OP's gauge) in stock:
https://www.mysticstamp.com/Product...s/LS175/USA/

It also has a version of the Kiusalas perf gauge for US stamps.

The Phil-A-Meter is older and smaller with less features. It's more portable.

Not too off-topic, but did you know that you cannot buy this "gem" on ebay, wherein the seller used this wonderful gauge...

Only $45,000 USD - but, Don't Buy!

Darn ... have been looking for an expensive 610.
Wonder why he doesn't accept returns?
