Never discard,
every stamp has a story, you just have to winkle it out.

Corrections welcomed,
I think what is happening, the furnacemen (in bare feet and sandals no less)
are navigating a white hot ingot, off the trolley, into the roller machine, which is hard to make out.
The worker at bottom right is having a meal break?

Love to see that painting in the flesh.

Maybe a silly question!
When and what date is the first recorded "postmark"?

Probably around 1000 BC
Correspondence travelling with seals of unknown origin, (Persia)
100 BC Roman mails with maybe wax, impressed with a signet ring.

I'll have to research that.

The first postmark to incorporate an actual reference to the posts,
is on a letter from Aleppo, Syria, to Leonardo da Vinci, at Ambose in 1519

The words POSTA CECA were struck on a wax seal.

The earliest postmark in Europe bearing the name of a town or Place,
was inscribed D'ARSEY and was applied at St Malo in 1683 on mail from Jersey.

Thanks
I was referring to the type of postmark on this 1740 seal.
Surely that only happened in the 1800's
But just a comment

Paul,
watermarks (generally) were employed to prevent forgeries.

With letter seals there was no prepayment of a service, hence no value
hence no watermark.

The first postmarks used to prevent re-use were the Maltese Cross
so, I would assume the first watermarks were Great Britain 1840 Penny Black

Later private paper makers did employ private business watermarks.
