I thought this HipStamp lot would be interesting to discuss.

It is described as "FIVE VOLUME 19TH CENTURY WORLD WIDE COLLECTION IN FIVE MAURY ALBUMS - $45,000). The seller's handle is "Pimpernel" and he is based in California. He claims he is well known (though I have never heard of anyone in philately who calls themselves Pimpernel).

The seller offers additional details about the collection and about himself as well in the detailed description:

"The most valuable collection ever run on the Internet. I have been putting up stamp auctions starting with Hip for over 20 plus years. I have sold three of Baron Frederich's collections all 19th century albums for $75,000 each and one at $125,000. Five years ago, the estate sent me a brass suitcase from his private bedroom suite in Switzerland. I was told I could review and certify whatever I wanted but offer to the public. I started certifying a few items but as expertizing has gone Waco with minor "this or that" including one certificate that says one perf tip enhanced I stopped applying for certs. About a year ago I was given the OK to run the Five- volume Maury collection as one lot. I argued with the estate but they remained firm. In order to give justice to the price they want which I consider way under market I will be putting up hundreds of scans. However, I am limited to two hundred scans on this web site. So, you are viewing a fraction of the collection! A general overview if I could use one phrase would be "unbelievable." There is a primary set of five classic Maury albums printed turn of the century. The original Baron likely bought these used as some stamps left in are minor or as a radical example Canada with a superb mint OG example of #1 & 2 ($75,000) #1 has corner repair; the Jubilees are complete used mostly with heavy cancels! The Baron for sure was an eccentric collector. Rarities abound, many signed or with a certificate, many not. There are some great US mint sets, coils and the best Confederate collection I ever have seen. The German section is beyond description with not only a fabulous States collection but covers as well. I have included the first page of France complete including the vermeil. The once cent P&C blue color has a certificate. Many countries are near complete. The French Colonies are superb. I could go on and on but decided to start with a preview of random items from 19th Century tom about the 1930's. For my regular collectors "GO FOR IT". You all know me and you all know The Barons collections. Here are the highlights of the Confederate stamps: New Orleans 62X7, Spartanburg SC 78X1, Knoxville Ten 47Xu1, Mobile Alabama 58X1, New Orleans 62X4,62X2, Charleston NC 16Xu1, 16Xu2, Macon GA 53x6, 53X7,53X8, Petersburg VA 65X1, Marion VA (rare), 55X2, New Orleans 62X2,Memphis TN 56X1,56X2. I HAVE FIVE FILES I CAN EMAIL YOIU IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. THE FILES CONTAINING AN ADDITYIONAL 400 PICTURES! JUST LET ME KNOW"

Sorry it's a long read! His feedback is interesting and worth a look if you decide to view the lot. I only saw 1 image of US stamps, and they are beyond my knowledge of US other than being aware most have high catalog values. I see some small faults in many of the US stamps, but would love to hear other opinions about what's here based on this image:

I personally find a number of things about this offer to be perhaps dodgy and will enjoy reading other opinions:

The story sounds familiar, but I cannot remember exactly where I heard it before. I think it was ebay a few years ago where a seller was spinning a tale about the Baron.

Not saying it is not a legit sale, but it stinks quite a bit IMO. The stamps shown could net high six to seven figures at Siegel if genuine and fault free. Interesting that absolutely NO certificates are mentioned.

Rog- very interesting. On that site you posted the owner solicits for donations! Seems too that he is trying to hijack the name of the PF. Awfully close.

Shermae - For sure. The website date is still 2019 if that means anything. The auctions tab/button brings you to a dead GoDaddy page. The whole thing smells.

Have heard of this pimpernel and the Baron for years though it has been a while. Always considered it a scam. High catalog flawed stamps. Never heard of any feedback of any kind ever. Beware!

This one has been around for awhile, avoid... Even with the poor images, forgeries apparent and some very weak areas & odd gaps for a supposedly amazing collection (e.g. classic Spain).

This page reports apparently the same seller offering a forged overprint in 2016.

Apart from the description that appears a lot of hot air scammers use to win trust, look at the first GB section. Most stamps have heavy cancels and / or are highly common. The quality is not very good for some and (apparently) good to fine for others.

And then there is a pristine unused GBP 5 Victoria from another album page with the word reprint next to it. Below it a 'Jubilee' set mostly mint that looks in good shape, but also cut from another album and pasted in.

The same thing happens with what looks like a good Edward VII set: cut from an album page and pasted on the Maury album. Then okay cancelled 'Seahorses' in mounts on a part page pasted onto the Maury page. But the GBP 1 is unused, but in a cut mount stuck in a mount stuck on the page pasted onto the Maury page.

There are more GBP pages later. Again, they are good to fine, but nothing special.

It raises questions.

NSK- thank you for the inciteful opinions on what you see in that collection. I am limited in my knowledge of 19th century material so I don't quickly see some of the key elements other than general condition. I collect mainly in the "middle period," 1910 to about 1970s.

This was a big part of my original reason for posting- to see if others would share knowledge so that I (and others) could learn from the folks in the forum.

The seller offers another item, an unissued Tientsin provisional. It, apparently, is so rare that even PostmasterGS does not have it.
He also shows a certificate referring to (Mi.) "Deutsche Post in China Nr. I" with a background that does not match the remainder of the certificate.

He also includes another certificate that states this stamp was never issued. And some other stuff to build his case.

For a well-known dealer using an alias, I keep coming back to the question why he requires so much hot air as if he is trying to sell a knackered second-hand motorcar.

edit: spelling error.

He has a book on Amazon. Some of the comments about it are less than flattering.

Excellent source of information for anyone considering the Stamp Collecting or Selling business.
Beoordeeld in de Verenigde Staten op 11 februari 2012
I have known the writer for thirty five years. Mr. DuBasso is the director of The American Philatelic Foundation, [...]. He has fifty years of expertise in stamp collecting, appraisals and has spoken at various conventions about stamp collecting. As director of APF he arranges donations of stamps to all the Veteran Hospitals that have stamp clubs as well as donating Disney related stamps to hundreds of Make A Wish Foundations throughout the US. This very best definitive book about stamp collecting is excellent for the beginner as well as advanced collector. More importantly it is a book for beginning stamp dealers to advanced dealers. Mr. DuBasso has traveled Worldwide attending rare philatelic auctions and representing serious stamp collectors in acquisition of the rarest of all stamps. He has helped numerous serious collectors to form International collections for pleasure and investment. It should be pointed out his new edition has a photo plate collection depicting what might be found in a good collection. This is of immense help for those who have inherited a collection so they can actually view stamps of better value to match these pictures with what might be in there inherited collections.

Also interesting how many women posted positive reviews.

Amazon reviews are not trustworthy, there are people who have a career writing them.
And if someone desired, they could write one for their own item and make it look like a third party wrote it.
