I've never seen this marking before and a couple other postal history buffs I've shown it to have never seen it. Any input is welcome from the postal history folks on SCF. Thanks.

At first look, my spidey senses went off when I saw such well stuck cancels...but the cover appears legit in other ways Don |

I had not seen the marking before, but it is listed in Simpson's U.S. Postal Markings 1851-61. It is only a rarity "3" marking - common 41 to 70 examples recorded |

I have seen that Saratoga Springs cancel before, and it was struck fairly well. But I have never seen this misspelling. |

Big mistakes can be made without the aid of a computer. Very nice cover. |

I see two cancelations, are Saratoga the recipient P.O. and Painted Do** the sender? |

Quote: I see two cancelations, are Saratoga the recipient P.O. and Painted Do** the sender? Yes, sort of. Originally sent from Painted Post, NY on Sep 10 to Saratoga Springs, where it was forwarded to Schenectady on Sep 13. |

The forwarding to Schenectady is in the same handwriting script as the original address. Isn't that odd, i.e., unlikely? |

Hi Basil, I agree they look similar but I believe there are differences. Look closely at the N in New York. Also note the ending stroke in the S, in one it ends with a circle, the other one does not. Don |

Similar, but not the same - compare the first "S" in Saratoga with the first "S" in Schenectady. The "N.Y." in the forwarding is completely different from the "N.Y." in the original address. Edit - was posting at the same time as Don |

On the other hand, the three "S's" in "Saratoga Springs" are all different, and the difference in "N.Y" also came from one being capital letters. So maybe the sender wrote the original address at home at the desk and corrected it hastily at the post office. In the second "N.Y" the "Y" runs out of the cover. It might not have happened if the sender wrote it at his desk. Can it be that Schenectady received its mail from Saratoga P.O. too? |

I used to have quite a few Painted Post CDS's. They have differing colors and are often well struck, and very nice appearing. Its a fun town to collect these CDS's from. This one is normal for it. The Saratoga Springs is common, and also often well struck.
I was unaware of the misspelled auxiliary marking, but as long as its 'known', then the rest of the cover appears perfectly legitimate.
Very nice cover by the way. |

Thanks to all who have commented so far. The cover shown still has its correspondence enclosed (from the addressee's son) and it is datelined Painted Post Sept 9th 1859. The cover comes from a large hoard of Norman Fox (and his associates) covers, probably 400+ covers, most with correspondence intact. Many covers originate at Painted Post, NY and txstamp is correct, most are struck with quite nice cancels as are the Saratoga Springs (and Schenectady), NY cancellations. Fox covers that I've shown previously on SCF are https://goscf.com/t/77815and a couple are shown in this thread in response to a topic initiated by txstamp in which I used Fox covers (scroll down just a little ways to see the 2nd one): https://goscf.com/t/71731&whichpage=1#636197Chevelle |

I noticed that the circle was completed in the "S" of Schenectady and not Saratoga Springs, but was more impressed with the broad ink stroke in all three of the capital "S"s. I did not look closely at the "N.Y." and the differences there are stark. Basil |

Quote: Fox covers that I've shown previously on SCF The new cover also has the destination deleted and replaced by "Schenectady", so I think again that the sender (not the butler) did it. |
