The "35" likely reference station or office 35 in a large city or a smaller city with many military offices (think ships).

Now Jim Forte has on his website as a service to collectors, not just customers an Post Office search function where you can search by name or just some letters and I assume numbers. I will do that later because I do not know if numbers work. HOWEVER go check it out yourself and play. Seach for your town name and see how many such towns are in the USA.

Edit:

Oh well....

The "35" in your cancel may not be part of a Post Office name but just a cancel device designation. I am done, perhaps others have more.

You can also figure this usage was in the 1947-1950 range and check the listings of post offices and naval ships in the annual July USPOD Postal Guides of 1947, 1948, 1950 and 1951. They can be found on stampsmarter.com.

Chicago has a Station "No.35" per the USPOD 7/1947 Postal Guide

The stations are numbered up to 342.

Edit:
The question remains, are there other large cities with stations number up to or over 35 and do they place the number in the killer bars?

Brooklyn NY and NYC, NY both run numbers to 35 and beyond, with NYC's naval roster having a 35 as well.

I believe Chicago is the only large city with a grouping (I hesitate to use the word "set") of 4-bar rubber-stamp devices like this.

Large cities would have been issued steel duplex devices with the number in the barred-football killer. Chicago had many of these also:

That's what I love about this site. I learn something new every day. Yet the more I learn, the more questions I have.

So you figure that these may all be from Chicago, or at least the higher numbered ones?

The few that have any portion of a city name do match Chicago. Curious about the different fonts/sizes for the same number, but I guess there is no reason why the station would be obliged to be consistent. Perhaps all offices in Chicago migrated from the large size to the small size at the same time. Wish these were all still on cover to solve that mystery. Somebody must know.

Thank you for the info - this cancel really piqued my curiosity. You're so very right, Zebraman, the more you learn from the folks here, the more questions arise. But that reinforces why this hobby is so fascinating - always something new.

So Chicago, eh? My second hometown. I remember being awed by the size of their main post office when I was a kid. (2.5 million sq. ft.) With a postal operation that massive, larger than some countries, it's not surprising that they might have some things unique to their system. I'll be searching for these on cover now.
