Hi! I am new to these forums and have recently inherited some stamps. I found this stamp(#359) in the lot and would like to know what type of value it carries? Thank you and here are pictures!
If it is a genuine Scott #359, it's worth several hundred dollars. However, it could easily be a Scott #333, which is worth more like 20c. The difference is in the paper color. It would need to be professionally authenticated to be able to successfully sell it as a Scott #359.
Guessing that the stamp was in a 359 album space or simply marked as a 359 in it's storage method. Very common wishful thinking. As others have said the stamp is offset printed so no bueno as far as bluish paper goes.
Beyond that, it serves a good general lesson to approach any album with caution with regard to the previous owner's identification accuracy (or desire to just put something in every space). This is especially true with the 1908-23 definitive series (the Washington/Franklin series), where common and rare stamps can often look similar at first.
