Hi all
I can't find any reference that identifies this stamp.
The closest I got was "saddle on emu" but I don't think it's even close. I hope the picture quality is ok.
Would appreciate any help

I am not convinced it is part of the printing.

It looks like some red stamp was applied. The saddle looks like part of what could be a '3.'

To me, it also looks like a slightly different shade of red, pointing to something else.

Have you noted how far off the "OS" is compared to normal stamps? ACSC notes that a misplaced overprint is one that is misplaced to the left, right, or up by approximately 5mm. Yours may be close to that threshold.

Of course, it is much better to see the specimen in person, but the color looks like it could be the same as the stamp color - a glancing view would help (again, better in person).

I have no experience with Australian stamps, but have quite a collection of US Transportation Coils.
These were mostly one color stamps, and I have several varieties with inkspots.
Several of these seem to be darker as the stamp color, and I believe that may be normal
My feeling about the KGV stamp is that the "saddle on the emu" are ink spots.
If that is the case you most likely will never find a second stamp like it!

It is not an inkspot. There is more on the body of the emu.

I'm looking at it
And agree
But then again my eyesight is strained.
I concur with your opinion.
It's a very interesting stamp in my opinion!

With the "OS" - I wonder if the "ail" has a purpose other than a place name?

Pshann: The flaw on the stamp you posted is a one-off, unlisted, flaw.

You need to find two more (the rule of three) for it to be considered a constant flaw. I've never seen that one before. So best of luck in your hunt.

Hi Pshan,

Thanks for the email. This will have to do for a reply.

I'm in Perth, Western Australia.

One of the best ways to get across the detail is to join a stamp club or two.

There are plenty of them around. In Perth, for example, there are at least 8.
They all meet regularly, have auctions, displays, talks and so on. Most have a library with the latest catalogues (at least the ACSC). All of them have dealer members – who have a vested interest in helping you find what you're looking for.

There is always the chance of finding somebody in a club who has the same interest and level of understanding/knowledge that you have, who you can pair with and learn together.

The only way to get "a clue" is to read the catalogues, read the online sites, read the online articles, and access reference material through your local library to study. While the local library may not hold the book on its shelves, it can, generally, get it in for you.

And, this Stamp Community Forum seems to be a good place to raise queries. Far better than some others. Far more polite too. Which is why I don't visit some of the others.

Finally, find yourself a local stamp dealer, preferably with a bricks and mortar shop, and get to know him/her. If they don't know, they generally know somebody who does.

Cheers

Black Swan
