(for the history of how I got here)
https://goscf.com/t/84680

From a collection I got on ebay: Final count in the box was 581. $34.68 (with tax and shipping} So ~6¢ ea. !!
Box was all stamped envelopes.

Here are a few quick picks of ones I liked right away.

Going to the mountains for a few weeks. Taking the box (and the UPSS catalog) to work on all the varieties. Will show more when I return.
Thanks,
pat

To USSR: Received PM on back.

FDC's are plentiful. Commercial uses seem harder to find (?) Received PM on back.

This one has some interesting details:
The basic envelope - One Cent Green on White, Die 161(B) U532a
3282 43 10 57 M-$100.00 U-$75.00. With PENALTY o/p price M=$35.00 Used not listed

As used by Harrison, Nebr. PO for C.O.D. notification (?).
With Harrison Nebr. Apr 30 1956 flag cancel.

Not listed in my Flag Cancel catalog. Only other example I found on ebay was a cover from 1938.

With what you have shown so far, that looks like a good deal, not purely kiloware. Congrats and have fun.

re Harrison flag
Listed in the hand stamp flag section of Langford's "Flag Cancel Encyclopedia", page 125 in the 4th edition, stating:
"The multitude of philatelically prepared specimens from Harrison, Nebr. are worth $2.00 each."
and that there are 7 varieties spanning from the 1930s to the 1950s.

This looks like a fun project! Nothing more exciting than stamp mail, especially if it's sort of a mystery grab bag!

John,
My third edition only has 119 pages.

Not sure I'd classify this one as a "philatelically prepared specimen"?

The hand stamp does appear to be a bit worn (late usage?) , but it could be the rough paper.

What is your opinion, in this instance, of the three points that tie the cover together: UPSS #, flag cancel , and PO usage.

It will have a nice place in my collection

Thanks,
pat

ok, so page 80 in your 3rd edition.

Cancel: poor strike, poorly inked.
Envelope: unevenly toned from identification band wrapped around it. Staining spots along bottom edge.
I don't have an opinion of the base value for being whatever envelope die it is, then devalued, etc. You have covered that part already.
PO use has some followers, some detractors.
It is not of "exhibit quality", so I doubt it would bring more than a few dollars.

Thank you for the honest opinion.

Those old ID bands on stationary have been the downgrade of many a fine specimen. At one time seemed to be the standard way to list the envelope variables.

It will be added to my less than "exhibit quality" collection.

The 1c green is a penalty overprint, type XIg (as noted on the band) and lists at $25.00 used on p166 of the UPSS penalty op catalog. Most (all?) penalty op envelopes were used for official business and the overprint demonetized the base envelope.

Perhaps Thomas Galloway, co-editor of the penalty op catalog and member of this forum will grace us with more info.
