In the first designs, you probably know there are 3 different colors:
1879 Brown
1884 Red Brown
1891 Bright Claret

You do not have any classified to 1891, which are more common than the 1884 color.
Best would be to have 3 reference stamps for the 3 colors that have been verified by someone who is familiar with the colors.
Then compare to that reference set to classify yours.

Wow, @postagedueguy, thank you for sharing those cool plate blocks.
When I have them side by side on my monitor I can see color differences.

The J27 definitely looks "bright claret", check.
J6 looks "brown", check.
J20 looks more like "grey brown" than "red brown" to me, but I don't have much experience with colors.

For color comparisons like this, it helps to have them all shot with the same camera, same lighting, and correct white balance.
Judging from the filenames, J6 and J20 were shot at about the same time,
so there should be no camera difference in the colors.

At first I was thinking maybe you classified them using the plate number and a specialized catalog,
but then I saw the plate number is the same on all three.

Thanks, I do have quite a few postage due plate blocks (14,000+) and I'm only missing fourteen. I have a cert on the J6 and the J27 comes from Siegel and the only one in ever reported. The pictures from my scanner aren't perfect, but you put the J6 and J20 next to each other you tell the difference. The plates used in printing J1 - J28 used according to denomination have the same plate numbers.

As to the colors according the Scott's Specialized J6 comes in brown and pale brown, J13 is deep brown, J20 comes in red brown and deep red brown, and J27 is bright claret.
