I was going through a collection I picked up and found this used postal stationary envelope. The only example I can see with the revalued 4c KGVI is UO36A, which has a surprisingly high catalog value ($150 in Unitrade).

What do others think?

Matt

My reading of the 2014 Unitrade says that UO36A is the 5c on 4c orange, and was used/issued from 1938 to 1951. Your cancellation is a little beyond that range (June 17, 1955) but not out of the realm of possibilities.

Note that UO varieties are called, "special order envelopes". These were ones "prepared for use by private businesses or government departments which differ in some basic way from regular issue envelopes". A keeper, in any case.

Is the GVI stamp red or orange? It is hard to decide from the scan.

Have you considered UE12 or UE13?

Thanks for the quick replies!

Partime: It's orange, and I agree definitely and interesting keeper. I'm going to see if I can figure out the organization that had them created. Like you, I can imagine them getting a whack of envelopes printed in time that they used over the next 4-5 years, so I agree it's in the right ballpark.

stamporator: I had a look at UE12/13 but the description indicates that there would be some election information posted in the upper left of the envelope, so I ruled it out.

Looks like EN128 in the latest (8th) Webb's, the bible of Canadian stationery. (page 9)
Value unused: $200, used $175. Nice find!

Thank you for the confirmation Sak. I just went looking to get a copy of Webb's as I have quite a pile of postal stationery, but it seems to be popular and out of stock everywhere.

How different is the 7th and 8th editions in your opinion?

Webb 7th and 8th edition are totally different. All the catalogue numbering was changed between the 2 editions which has lead to a lot of confusion when trying to buy something. You need to be sure to confirm which edition the catalogue number refers to. There is a cross reference table in the 8th edition. To make matters worse, Unitrade stopped listing Canadian Postal Stationery once Webb 8th was published. I do not believe that there is a cross reference list between the old Unitrade numbers and the new Webb numbers.

Further, in my opinion the 8th edition has numerous errata which were supposed to be listed online, but the last time I looked this errata list has not been posted.
