For any person who is familiar with revenue stamps;

What are tax paid revenues and how do they differ from "regular" revenues?

Is this a typical word used in the USA?

Thanks so much

Hello jossanders!

The first taxpaid stamps were for beer, tobacco products (including cigars), and distilled spirits. The taxes levied on those products are often referred to as "sin taxes."

Here's a brief rundown of the earliest issues of US taxpaids...

1864: The 1st and 2nd issues of cigar stamps were issued, called Inspectors Stamps. While these are listed discussed as taxpaid stamps, they are actually not. Unlike actual taxpaid stamps (first issued in 1867), they were not designed to be purchased so as to pay the tax due. They were more of an official seal placed on cigars by gov't appointed cigar inspectors who determined the tax due on each individual box/package of cigars they inspected.

1866–1867: The 3rd & 4th issue cigar stamps (also Inspectors Stamps)

1867: The first actual taxpaid stamps were issued: Beer Stamps

1868: The first taxpaid stamps issued for Tobacco and Distilled Spirits

Hello essay proof,

Thanks so much for the explanation. That means that most revenue stamps are taxpaid besides maybe court fee stamps or other stamps the government agencies stick on documents.
Is my understanding of your mail, correct?

Thanks

I think essay proof is correct on the meaning of the term, but collectors (at least in the US) typically refer to taxpaids as the stamps denominated in quantity of a product rather in money. The revenue stamps denominated in money (1¢, $1 etc.) are generally listed in the Scott Specialized catalog used in the US. Stamps denominated in units of the taxed product (50 cigars, 1 lb. snuff, etc.) are generally not listed in the Scott Catalog. Some stamps have both dollars and units.

I've edited my post to make it less confusing.

SPQR is correct about taxpaids having denominations in quantities of a product rather than a monetary amount, but that changed over time. Example: the 1st tobacco taxpaid stamps were denominated in ounces or pounds of tobacco, and the tax rate. But later issues of tobacco taxpaids indicated the actual amount of tax paid.

Attached are examples of three early taxpaids. Not shown to scale. The first stamp, for distilled spirits from 1868, is actually quite large.

This stamp is actually the size of a postage stamp, from 1868. Two ounces, "Class 32 Cents" (the tax rate):

This stamp indicates the actual amount of tax paid by the stamp, from 1869.
