This came in today. I liked it because it was all joined pairs, Registered used from Pretoria, SA 16 Dec1949 to Eshowe, Zululand 19 Dec 1949

Construction started on 13 July 1937 - ( WW2 paused construction) Inaugurated on 16 December 1949.

SG 76 - 79 are not listed in Scott as they're for the 1938 Voortrekker Centenary Memorial Fund.
South Africa SG76-79 can be found in Scott at South Africa B5-B8.

SG 80 - 81 1938 Voortrekker Commemoration is listed. (center two pairs)

Given that stamps such as these serve primarily as postage stamps, it has always puzzled me as to why Scott has chosen to relegate these stamps to the Back of the Book.

That being said, I grew up within a stone's throw from the Voortrekker Monument an impressive piece of fascist architecture that as an English-speaking South African made me extremely uncomfortable even as a child.

It was built to commemorate the defeat of the Zulus at the Battle of Bloed Rivier (blood river) on 16th Dec 1838 by the Voortrekkers (Boers), and to this day many of their modern-day descendants believe that the victory was ordained by God.

I would imagine that other races especially the Zulus would find the monument even more unpalatable given the not too subtle message extolling Afrikaans Nationalism and the superiority that it represents.
