I started collecting as a teen in the 70's, tried my darndest to fill my Harris Ambassador album. Received stamps from Harris, Mystic and Garcelon through the mail, probably like a lot of the members. That was fun!

Finally realized I had a better chance filling an album by sticking only with US Stamps. Still can't seem to fill the album but having a blast these days picking back up the old hobby.

Thanks for having me!

RME, welcome to the forum! What era(s) of USA do you collect? And in what format, singles only or...? Mint or used?

Welcome aboard,

Your early collection experience matched mine exactly.

If you're willing to bend a little on quality i.e., not perfectly centered, etc., you can find 97ish percent of the empty spaces in your album(?) on ebay for reasonable prices.

You may also decide to widen your interests by getting into precancels, plate blocks, covers, etc.

Good Luck

Greg

Hi rme! Wow, another Garcelon'er from the 70s - we should start club! As justanotherswell remarked I also have a lot of the same experience including the old Harris Liberty Album. And eastriver is right, after three years of listening in on these conversations I have more good ideas than I'll ever be able to pull off.

In addition to sticking with the U.S. I've branched out to Canada, GB and Germany. It's really more than I can handle and I end up cycling around during the year from from one to the other.

Good luck!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I really only collect US mint comms airmails, and Reg Issues, dabble a little with other back of book stuff.

Gonna try stay away from Ducks for now, looks like that can be a wormhole I don't think I'm ready to enter. haha!!

Lately kind of getting addicted to plate blocks, that's where ebay comes in... HAHA!! Broke out my old Harris PB album and started filling spaces.

All my old foreign stamps from youth are just gathering dust. Funny, I still have stamps in their glasine "Garcelon" envelopes. Good memories.

I made a great flea market find recently with a huge US mint stock book, a used one, as well as a Canada mint stock book.

Don't have much use for the Canada, but it was this find that got me stoked into returning to collecting.

rmeclark2112,

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ
