All,

I have been struggling with this one. Can anyone help me identify this cancel. I believe it to be genuine, given where it was obtained, but I have had a few people try help me without success. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hobsun

stalizer,

That could well be. I tried to match it up with a potential sample cancel from the "Dietz 1929" book but this was not one of the samples provided.

So far that has been the best guess that I have heard but this may just remain as "unconfirmed" which to me is an irritant.

Thanks,
Hobsun

Not sure of the cancel, but the stamp at right is a nice example of the "white tie" variety.

I am reading Talcott (WV). Just a wild guess.

West Virginia was a "border" state of the Confederacy. Would they have used Confederate Stamps during the early part of the Civil War? West Virginia became a member of the Union in 1863, so it did exist for 2 years as part of Virginia. It's unfortunate the cancel doesn't have the year imprint.
