I have a 1926 20pfg Bluish green Beethoven stamp which has been perforated with 'HN'. I can't find any mention of the perforation in a catalogue. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Yes it is a perfin ,I tink that these perforations were made from public and private institutions as banks and others. We have them also on Bulgarian stamps .
And of course

Is it on a small piece, or an envelope?

There exist catalogues for these perforated initials, or 'perfins'. The reason you will notfind them in general catalogues is that they are private perforations.

There are a few exceptions that are listed in catalogues - but one general catalogue publisher may and the other may not list them -. These tend to be stamps that had the perfins for 'official' use.

Your example is one of the private issues only listed in catalogues published by perfin study groups.
