I know very little about Penny Reds and the more I read, the more confused I get. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated. Is there anything here that is of more than just general interest?

Thanks
Mel

Hi Mel,

Stamps with letters in all four corners have the plate number incorporated into the design. They read vertically and are in the netting on each side of the stamp. You'll most probably need a magnifying glass to see them.

There's also interest in the numeral cancellations. You'll need the appropriate references to look up where each one is from.

Hope this helps

The one in the bottom row, second from the left, with TA as the corner letters, is actually a different stamp from the others, this one is the so-called Venetian red one penny stamp issued in 1880, as opposed to all the others which were issued in 1864. It also catalogues for a bit more in fine condition than the most common plate numbers of the 1864 issue.
