Hello, everyone!

I need some help identifying some flaws. I would like to know if the flaws indicated in blue on the attached stamps may be some variation/error listed in a specialized catalog. I identify the stamps as SG 47, 86, and 87.

Any comments would be helpful.

In this one, the number seems to be melting

In this, the word 'HALF' looks like 'HAL,F'

Yes, littleriverphil. Very nice thread. For sure I learned a lot, but I didn't find any match. Thanks for the link.

The first stamp involves a compartment line down the right side. Compartment lines occur when ink is deposited from the plate onto the area outside the normal stamp area. They are not strictly varieties but they do tend to have a distinctive shape for each position that they occur. They can be found on any or all sides of a stamp. I am not sure what causes them but over-inked plates could be responsible.

The last of your examples appears to be the variety listed in ACSC as (4)d (Plate 4, position 4L1). It exists as 91(4)d with perf 14 (SG 87)and 92(4)d with perf 13½ x 12½ (SG 96), both with small multiple watermark. This variety is not listed in the Stanley Gibbon's catalogue.

I'll see if I can identify the others in the next week or so.

Compartment line happened because of the huge amount of stamp printing of the 1d KGV reds that took place. Being the standard letter rate of the time. During the mass printing process ink built up on the margin areas of the stamp print. The ink in this area became so built up that compartment line printing on the stamps took place. A 4 sided compartment lined stamp is a recognised varitey and hard to find.
